Crisis management is a short-term, solution focused approach aimed at resolving the immediate crisis and preventing long-term problems. The goal is to provide immediate safety and support services and interventions aimed at quickly addressing acute mental health emergencies and stabilizing individuals in crisis. The focus is immediate safety, support, and developing plans for next steps. Safety planning is often preventative in nature and outlines steps to take in the event of a crisis.
Geropsychology is a specialized area within psychology that focuses on the mental health and well-being of older adults. It involves understanding, treating, and improving the psychological experiences of people aged 65 and older. Geropsychologists work with older adults who may be experiencing depression, anxiety, dementia, grief, and other mental health conditions. Geropsychology recognizes that aging involves physical, cognitive, and emotional changes, and it addresses the unique challenges and opportunities of late life. Collaboration with individuals, families, and caregivers provides a supportive network that may address a range of issues related to aging, including mental health conditions, cognitive decline, and adjustments to life transitions. Geropsychologists recognize the resilience and strengths of older adults and help them adapt to life changes and maintain a positive outlook. Geropsychologists advocate for policies and practices that support the mental health and well-being of older adults.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have significant psychological effects, impacting mood, behavior, and cognitive abilities. These effects can range from mild to severe, and can manifest as changes in personality, emotional lability, mood swings, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, anger, irritability, aggression, impulsivity, as well as other behavioral disturbances. Additionally, TBI also presents significant cognitive and functional deficits such as: Difficulties with planning, decision-making; problem-solving, and organizing tasks; Loss of social inhibitions, leading to inappropriate behaviors in social settings; Problems understanding and responding to social cues, potentially impacting social interactions; Difficulty focusing, maintaining attention, and concentrating on tasks; Difficulties with short-term and long-term memory, impacting learning and recall, Impairments in higher-level cognitive functions, such as planning, decision-making, and problem-solving. Providing emotional support, counseling, and family therapy to help individuals and their families cope with the challenges of TBI. Through neurological testing clinicians may evaluate cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning to identify specific areas of impairment and develop individualized treatment plans. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an intervention empirically recognized to assist individuals identify and change maladaptive thoughts and behaviors.

Cognitive and memory rehabilitation in psychology focuses on improving cognitive functions like memory, attention, and problem-solving through various interventions. These interventions aim to either restore cognitive abilities after a brain injury or stroke, or to compensate for cognitive deficits to maximize daily functioning. Cognitive rehabilitation incorporates strategies to improve memory and other cognitive skills through psychological exercises and activities. A multidisciplinary approach assesses and addresses brain-behavior deficits to improve daily functioning, independence, and quality of life. The goal is to either restore lost cognitive abilities or to compensate for deficits by developing new skills, strategies, resources, as well as application of supportive and assistive technologies.
Alpha-Stim is a neurological intervention that uses cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) to treat anxiety, insomnia, and depression, and can also be used for pain management. It works by delivering a low-intensity electrical current to the head, specifically through clips attached to the earlobes. The device is designed to increase alpha brainwave activity, which is associated with relaxation and a sense of well-being. Alpha-Stim has been shown to be effective in: reducing anxiety symptoms; improve insomnia improve sleep quality and duration, potentially leading to better sleep patterns; improve depression and mood; Assist with pain management, both acute and chronic pain, and can help reduce the need for pain medication.
Biofeedback is a technique that helps people learn to control certain bodily functions, like heart rate, breathing, or muscle tension, that are usually involuntary. It uses electronic sensors to monitor these functions and provide real-time feedback, allowing individuals to learn to consciously influence them. This can be helpful for managing stress, anxiety, and other conditions related to involuntary bodily responses.
Psychiatric service dogs (PSDs) are trained to assist individuals with mental health conditions by performing specific tasks to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. PSDs can be trained to alert their handler of: Medical needs such as the onset of a panic attack, seizure, or other medical emergency; Interrupt self-harm or self-destructive behaviors like scratching, cutting, or hair pulling; Provide stability and grounding by standing between their handler and crowds or nudge them to help them stay grounded; Retrieve medication when needed, either on request or when triggered by an alarm; provide safety checks for individuals with PTSD; Block their handler from wandering into danger during dissociative episodes; Promote positive environments by picking up on stress signals and intervening and shifting focus. These dogs are recognized under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and have the same legal protections as other service animals. Psychiatric Service Dogs are not the same as Emotional Service Dogs (ESAs). ESAs provide comfort and companionship but are not trained to perform specific tasks. ESAs are not recognized as service animals under the ADA and do not have the same legal protections.
